Tips On How To Find Local Piano Lessons   by Wisam Abdulaziz

For centuries, parents have encouraged their children to learn piano for any number of reasons: there are correlations between studying music and improved grades at school; it teaches life lessons about the rewards of hard work and persistence; and of course producing beautiful music is a reward in itself. Finding the right piano instructor is crucial, as great ones can maximize a student’s potential in short time and bad ones can turn them off the instrument forever. Here are things to keep in mind to make sure you’re going about it the right way.

If you want the absolute best teachers in the most rigorous programs, go the music conservatory. It’ll cost you substantially more money but you can know that your teacher is a certified expert. This isn’t just for people with passion, but people who want to play Classical music properly. There’ll be strong emphasis on technique, and the graded pieces you learn get increasingly hard as you go along. In other words, there’s a structured program in place. This is for serious students.

Now, you might love music and be a dedicated, devoted student, but feel the conservatory is not the right environment for you. Perhaps you need something more relaxed that’ll teach you a different kind of repertoire. There’s a few good tips on finding teachers to keep in mind. Look online or on flyers for teachers in your area. Don’t just commit to the first ones. Be on the lookout for serious playing experience or experience in teaching. The more accreditations the better. If they’re a musician, try and find their music online, and feel free to take lessons if you enjoy what you hear. If they have no music online find out what their teaching experience is. What you don’t want is a sketchy kid-get someone who takes their job seriously. While you don’t need touring experience or a university degree to be an excellent teacher, it’s a good way of distinguishing how professional someone is off the bat. This will mean the cost of lessons is higher too, but you get what you pay for.

If you have friends who are musicians, ask them where they learned. Getting personal referrals is the most reliable way of getting someone who you’ll be a good match with. At the end of the day, you’re not looking for the ultimate musician per se; you need a very good, experienced musician capable of inspiring you to learn and practice. This requires a personal bond, not just experience and degrees. For this reason, seeking out teachers who have worked for people you know is probably the best, especially if the people you know live in your area.

Of course, before you commit to anyone, find out their area of expertise and compare rates. Most teachers will say they can play anything, and that’s true, but before telling them what music you like most, ask them what is their favourite. If you’re in synch, great! It’s worth noting, but just because someone loves the same music as you doesn’t mean they can play it so well. In any case, keep the above in mind and good luck on the hunt and beyond.

Ultimate $7.97 Released a few months after the mid-priced compilation Platinum & Gold Collection, Ultimate is a longer, more comprehensive overview than its predecessor, which doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s a better choice for the casual listener. Platinum & Gold Collection has a concentrated selection of radio hits from the Alan Parsons Project, featuring nearly all of their charting singles, including “You’re Gonna Get Your Fingers Burned,” a minor hit missing on Ultimate; for that reason, along with its cheaper list price, it remains a better choice for listeners who want the pop-oriented side of Parsons. Ultimate is for the fans who listened to the Project on album-oriented FM radio, yet never bought the full-length records. While all the big hits are here, the focus is more on the elaborate instrumentals and prog epics that made the group a staple of AOR in the late ’70s and early ’80s. There are some missing hits here — not just the aforementioned “You’re Gonna Get Your Fingers Burned” but also “Stereotomy,” “Let’s Talk About Me,” and “Snake Eyes” — but they’re not particularly missed, since all the radio favorites are here, and it’s a well-sequenced collection. Ultimate Piano Concertos: The Essential Masterpieces [Box Set] $15.18 Unlike many budget compilations that offer only selected movements or brief excerpts, Decca’s Ultimate Piano Concertos: The Essential Masterpieces presents 10 masterworks in their entirety on five CDs, giving concerto fans a satisfying listening experience. Granted, these reissues are not audiophile recordings, nor are the performers familiar in every case; but for analog recordings from the 1950s to the 1970s, and digital recordings from the 1980s, the sound is quite good, and the performers are never less than fine, though in many instances, they are indeed exceptional. These concertos are at the top of most virtuoso pianists’ lists, and though fashions change, all of these concertos have staying power and are regularly played in competitions around the world. Arguably the two most popular concertos are presented on the first disc, with Viktoria Postnikova performing Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in B flat minor and Cristina Ortiz playing Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor; both recordings are digital and offer great presence and clarity of details, as will be found on disc 2 in Jorge Bolet’s dynamic renditions of Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A minor and Schumann’s Piano Concerto in A minor. Disc 3 features the oldest recordings with the murkiest sound, but Clifford Curzon’s performances of Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4 in G major and the Piano Concerto No. 5 in E flat major, “Emperor,” are still enjoyable for their great musicality and technical brilliance. Stephen Kovacevich’s crystal-clear performances of Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 21 in C major, “Elvira Madigan,” and the Piano Concerto No. 25 in C major make disc 4 a delight, while Claudio Arrau’s recordings on disc 5 of Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in E minor and the Piano Concerto No. 2 in F minor are moving classics that fully deserve inclusion and have excellent sound for their age. Ultimate Piano Classics (5CD box set) $16.12 Ultimate Classical Piano is part of Decca’s “Ultimate” series of box sets, released in 2006. The five discs each contain 20 tracks of some of the most familiar and famous piano works ever written, performed by some of greatest pianists, all pulled from Decca’s vast archive. The selections range from the Baroque music of Rameau, Daquin, and Bach, to the 20th century music of Rachmaninov and Falla, but they are not organized in any particular fashion. There are a few transcriptions (Saint-Saëns’ The Swan, arias from Bach cantatas), a couple of Dvorák’s Slavonic Dances performed in the original piano duet versions, and even a waltz by Arensky for two pianos. Just a few of the highlights are Vladimir Ashkenazy playing Chopin, Alicia de Larrocha playing Albéniz and Granados, and Julius Katchen playing Brahms. There’s something for everyone here: Chopin’s rousing “Heroic” Polonaise, Debussy’s humorous Golliwogg’s Cakewalk, MacDowell’s gentle To a Wild Rose, the nocturnal opening of Beethoven’s “Moonlight” Sonata, and everything in between to suit your mood. The sound quality is overall very good, but does vary from track to track as is expected in a collection of this kind. The Ultimate Most Relaxing Classical Piano Music in the Universe $9.58 One of Denon’s Ultimate Most Relaxing [insert type of music here] in the Universe series that culls performances from the Denon catalog, this disc of piano music encompasses much more than most similar compilations, which generally only feature solo piano music. This one uses movements from piano concertos, piano trios, and even one from Brahms’ two piano Sonata, Op. 34b. And, with the exception of the Adagio from Beethoven’s “Moonlight” Sonata and his “Für Elise,” and a couple of other pieces, the 23 selections are a little more diverse than what’s in other chillout mixes. Instead of the over-used “Elvira Madigan” Andante from Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 21, there’s the Larghetto from the Piano Concerto No. 24. Instead of Debussy’s Reverie, there’s a lovely one by Mussorgsky. As with most compilations, the sound quality and the level of artistry vary from track to track. With the sound, listeners may find themselves adjusting the volume more for the tracks on the second disc than on the first. As for the performers, most play pleasantly, a couple really stand out, and only two tracks are not worth hearing more than once. The ones worth noting are Hélène Grimaud — with tracks taken from her very first recordings, made when she was a teenager — Valery Afanassiev, Jacques Rouvier, Bruno-Leonardo Gelber, and Vladimir Tropp. They all have a sensitivity toward the music that makes it exactly what anyone would want for relaxation: delicate shading and soft tones. The ones to avoid are Yuji Takahashi’s Gymnopedie No. 1, with oddly spiking dynamics, and the Andante from Brahms’ Sonata for Two Pianos, Op. 34b, where the two pianists are not very well matched and not always together — even when they are not supposed to be together. One other annoyance is the fadeout on disc two, track five, the second movement of Schumann’s Piano Concerto, which otherwise goes right into the finale.
