Scott McCarl may have only appeared on a single Raspberries release (their 1974 swan song, Starting Over), but the bassist was a very talented singer/songwriter — one of the reasons why Eric Carmen and company enlisted him in the first place. So why it took McCarl so bloody long to issue a solo album in the wake of the Raspberries’ 1975 split-up was a bit puzzling to fans. Titled after his best-known Raspberries composition, Play On surfaced in 1998, and showed that despite the long layoff, McCarl’s gift for Beatlesque vocals and power pop had not dulled in the slightest. Standouts include such melodic originals as “I’ll Be on My Way,” “In Love Without a Girl,” and “Run for the Sun,” as well as a pair of covers — “Yes It Is” by the Beatles and “Nobody Knows” by his old pals, the Raspberries. Hardcore Raspberries fans should definitely try to hunt down a copy of Play On — it’s pretty darn impressive how well McCarl single-handedly approximates his former band’s sticky-sweet sound. ~ Greg Prato, Rovi Performers: Fran Kowalski – Vocal Harmony, Harmony Vocals; Al Chan – Vocals (Background), Bass; Billy Sullivan – Rhythm, Vocal Harmony, Slide Guitar, Harmony Vocals, Percussion, Guitar (Acoustic), Piano, Drums, Guitar, Guitar (12 String), Vocals; Don Krueger – Drums; Donn Spindt – Vocals (Background), Drums; Robert Grogan – Drums; Scott McCarl – Vocal Harmony, Rhythm, Harmony Vocals, Multi Instruments, Guitar, Guitar (Acoustic), Piano, Bass, Guitar (Electric), Keyboards, Organ, Vocals;

 ''Sparring with fate'': Miriam Gideon's 1958 opera ''Fortunato''.

”Sparring with fate”: Miriam Gideon’s 1958 opera ”Fortunato”.

$49.99

In 1958, American composer Miriam Gideon (1906-1996) completed her only opera, Fortunato: An Opera in Three Scenes. Although the opera has never received a performance, it may be regarded as a central work within Gideon’s style and oeuvre. Gideon fashioned her own libretto for Fortunato from Serafin and Joaquin Alvarez Quintero’s 1912 farce of the same name, creating a uniquely personal work with distinct connections between music and biography. This study examines significant changes Gideon made when transforming the play to the libretto, and interprets these changes through the lens of Gideon’s personal writings and correspondence during the period of the opera’s composition. After outlining the musical language of the opera, I perform close analytical readings of significant passages and arias, drawing insights from the fields of musicology, post-tonal analysis, feminist theory, and disability studies. Judith Butler’s concept of “utterance” informs an embodied exploration of Fortunato from the perspective of the singer. Attitudes towards women, sexuality, and feminism during the American 1950s provide a context for the study, which also delves into reception of Gideon’s other works during the postwar era.;In addition to providing a detailed biographical sketch and a comprehensive discography, this dissertation includes two transcriptions: Gideon’s “1939 Paris” diary, and my edited version of Fortunato in piano-vocal score. Until now, the opera has only been available in a marginally legible handwritten copy. The provision of an edited score is central to the study’s primary goal: to illuminate a valuable yet unsung American operatic work through an examination of the rich biographical material now available about its composer.

 ...And They Have Escaped the Weight of Darkness

…And They Have Escaped the Weight of Darkness

$16.98

They must be putting something in the water over there in Iceland that makes musicians work in unexpected ways. Their biggest pop and rock exports — Bj? rk and Sig? r Ros, respectively — have borne very little relation to what the rest of the world thinks of as pop and rock, so why should their most promising young neo-classical composer be any different? At an age when most young men are still trying to decide between grad school and the night shift at Denny’s, Olafur Arnalds has already made a name for himself as a musical maverick who skirts the edges of the classical, rock, electronic, and avant-garde worlds with enthusiastic ease, a Nico Muhly with a higher tolerance for cold weather, if you will. On his second full-length release, Arnalds moves further away from electronics to embrace a more acoustically oriented approach centered on piano and strings. Electronics do play a supporting role — they’re simply used to enhance the atmosphere here and there, but in the main, Arnalds is creating 21st century chamber music here, as the piano makes simple, elegant statements whose harmonic possibilities are further fleshed out by the strings. And Arnalds may be a modernist in terms of pushing stylistic boundaries, but he still has some old-school, downright romantic notions about melodic movement — you won’t find any polytonality or serial music among these tracks. Arnalds prefers instead to repurpose old-school harmonic conventions in a new context, offering the listener a readily accessible emotional connection but still breaking new ground. And on the few strategic spots in the album where Arnalds drops in drums and/or electric guitar and repetitive motifs, the effect is not dissimilar to the headier moments of the aforementioned Sig? r Ros, or perhaps early-? 70s Pink Floyd at their most ethereal, showing the rock crowd that they too have a point of entry into this music. ~ J. Allen, Rovi
