Recorded near the end of his membership in Soft Machine, End of an Ear finds Wyatt experimenting far more with jazz and avant-garde material than in the jazz-rock-structured environment of his band. The Wyatt on The End of an Ear (a play on words for the end of the SM era, and another session called “Ear of the Beholder”) is still very much the fiery drummer and percussionist who is interested in electronic effects and out jazz and not the composer and interpretive singer of his post-accident years. Influenced by Miles Davis’ electric bands and the fledgling Weather Report who did their first gigs in the U.K., Wyatt opens and closes the album with two readings of Gil Evans’ “Las Vegas Tango, Pt. 1.” These are the most structured pieces on the recording, and the only ones not dedicated in some way: “To Mark Everywhere,” “To Caravan and Brother Jim,” “To Nick Everyone,” “To the Old World (Thank You for the Use of Your Body, Goodbye),” “To Carla, Marsha, and Caroline (For Making Everything Beautifuller),” and others. The titles reveal how personal the nature of these sound experiments can be. Wyatt, because of his association with many in the Canterbury scene, not the least of which is SM mate Elton Dean who prominently appears here, was learning alternate structures and syntax for harmony, as well as the myriad ways rhythm could play counterpoint to them in their own language. The interplay between Wyatt, bassist Neville Whitehead, cornet player Marc Charig, and alto man Dean on “To Nick Everyone” is astonishing. Wyatt creates time from the horn lines and then alters it according to Whitehead’s counterpoint both to the formal line and the improvisations. Toward the end of the track, Wyatt’s piano is dubbed in and he reveals just how expansive he views this new harmonic approach. The piano becomes a percussion instrument purely, a timekeeper in accordance with the bass, and the drums become counterpoint — in quadruple time — to everyone else in the band. When David Sinclair’s organ enters the fray and another piano courtesy of Mark Ellidge, as well as assorted percussion by Cyril Ayers, the entire thing becomes a strange kind of rondo in free jazz syntax. The Whitey on the Moon UK LP (which became The Cold Nose after the band’s name change) was based on the same core set of songs, give or take some bonus tracks, that Daniel Rossen and Fred Nicolaus recorded in college with their friends as their only intended audience. In Ear Park is Department of Eagles’ first full-fledged, self-contained album, and it shows just how far the pair has come since their early days. Their playful, detailed approach to crafting sounds remains, but Rossen’s stint in Grizzly Bear helped hone his songwriting skills, and life experiences enriched them: In Ear Park was inspired by his childhood, dedicated to his late father, and named after what he called one of his favorite places to go as a boy. The band frames these very personal observations in experimental, symphonic/acoustic/electronic pop, using its grandiosity to convey the power of memories. “In Ear Park”‘s rippling guitars conjure up a far-off, sun-dappled yesterday, and the way its backing vocals and waltz rhythms swell capture the way a memory can completely immerse someone. Van Dyke Parks’ widescreen sound is a major influence, especially on the excellent “Teenagers,” which, with its elegantly woozy guitars, pianos, woodwinds, and ’20s style megaphone vocals, feels nostalgic for a time much longer ago than when either Rossen or his father would have been teenagers. Similarly, Rossen’s dreamy warble of a voice sounds older than his years, particularly on “Herringbone,” where he sings “when you are gone, you are gone.” The oddness of his vocals is a perfect fit for the dazzling amount of stuff going on in these songs — which, not surprisingly since Grizzly Bear’s Chris Taylor and Chris Bear play on it, recalls Rossen’s work with his other band. “Phantom Other” builds from simple vocals and acoustic guitar to bubbling keyboards, massive guitars, and drums, while “Classical Records” incorporates footsteps, toy piano, and double bass into its darkly trippy swirl. In Ear Park’s sonic flights of fancy are impressive in their own right, but even more so on the most tightly structured songs, such as the haunting standout “No One Does It Like You,” a bouncy, wistful homage to ’60s pop that’s so yearning, it seems to be nostalgic for nostalgia. Excerpt: Leon Bismark “Bix” Beiderbecke (March 10, 1903 August 6, 1931) was an American jazz cornetist, jazz pianist, and composer. With Louis Armstrong, Beiderbecke was one of the two most influential jazz soloists of the 1920s. His turns on “Singin’ the Blues” (1927) and “I’m Coming, Virginia” (1927), in particular, demonstrated an unusual purity of tone and a gift for improvisation. They helped to invent the jazz ballad style and hinted at what, in the 1950s, would become cool jazz. “In a Mist” (1927), one of a handful of his piano compositions but the only one he recorded, mixed classical influences with jazz syncopation; its complex harmonic structure served as a preview of the bebop revolution. Beiderbecke has also been credited for his influence, directly, on Bing Crosby and, indirectly, on Lester Young. A native of Davenport, Iowa, Beiderbecke taught himself to play cornet largely by ear, leading him to adopt a non-standard fingering that some critics have connected to his original sound. He first recorded with the Midwestern jazz ensemble the Wolverines in 1924, after which he played briefly for the Detroit-based Jean Goldkette Orchestra before joining Frankie “Tram” Trumbauer for an extended gig at the Arcadia Ballroom in St. Louis, Missouri. Beiderbecke and Trumbauer both joined Goldkette in 1926. The band toured widely and famously played a set opposite Fletcher Henderson at the Roseland Ballroom in New York City in October 1926.
