Niche Music Booking Agents – What They Are and How You Can Work With Them
Niche Music Booking Agents – What are they and how you can work with them: Music booking agents may at first seem like a very hard group of people to reach. They have criteria that they are looking for and the main one is fan base.
As a band you constantly look for ways to develop your fan base. That could mean posting up flyers, developing street teams, posters, developing internet teams to post things on the internet in places where other people are going to hear about you etc. Whether it’s to promote a show or to actually just talk about and post links to music, its all good promotion for the artist. There’s loads of stuff you can do, and to really get serious attention from music booking agents, the best thing you can do is develop your fan base.
In general, music booking agents are interested in artists that make money, because they make money based on how much the artist gets paid. So it follows that the more fans an artist has, the more money they make and the more interested a music booking agent will be!
There isn’t necessarily a shortcut to this whole scenario, but if there was one, it would be to go through a label or manager or someone who has relationships with music booking agents.
The bottom line is: the more fans you have, the more people in the industry are going to be familiar with you and interested in you. And if you can’t develop fans…you need to go back to the drawing board and figure out what’s not working!
Now here is the interesting part: There is an interesting development going on in the world of music booking agents, and that is that as the world continues to advance technologically, and we all are increasingly connected to one another, many “grass roots” organizations are cropping up that leverage social networks to bring together very niche groups of people. Its very much worth your while to find out who the “niche” music booking agents are in your type of music and to begin to market yourself to them somehow. These people are often referred to as alternative music booking agents and usually have a very strong relationship with their audience.
Before, someone may have had to put an ad in the paper or put something on the internet to sell tickets. Now, these alternative promoters have more of a “relationship” with their audience where it’s more of a grassroots approach. They are more of a tribe leader. The good news it that these tribe leaders can be found in most major cities. Bands can take a different approach now, they can get in touch with people in their “scene” in all the different towns and c

7 Books $12.78 Steffen Basho-Junghans wields his guitar like a divining rod on 7 Books. Sensitive to the subtle vibrations of his instrument, he patiently follows its lead to fresh wellsprings of inspiration. The innovations of Fahey, Sandy Bull, and Basho (whose name Junghans incorporated into his own years ago as a tribute to the master) make up the foundation here. But Basho-Junghans takes it a step further, shedding all but the most distant reference to the blues; these seven “books” sound more like traditional Indian ragas arranged for 12-string guitar and then filtered through a free jazz sensibility. String buzz and other such “mistakes” are used to create harmonic texture, and melody gives way to an almost mantra-like sense of repetition. The results are convincing, and Basho-Junghans is able to explore a surprisingly wide variety of moods over the course of the two-disc set — from rollicking and celebratory to mournful and austere. Book “IV” even sounds like the guitar is throwing a temper tantrum like a toddler. With artists like Basho-Junghans plucking out fresh sonic discoveries, solo acoustic guitar music is in no danger of becoming a dry field barren of ideas anytime soon. ~ Jason Nickey, Rovi |

Faking the Books $18.38 Lali Puna don’t allow their soft electronic-pop to be washed out by the sharp guitars that occasionally poke out of this, the group’s third album for Morr Music. Those who picked up 2003′s “Left Handed” single — provided again on this disc — were possibly taken aback by the instant buzzing surge in the chorus of the A-side, and, excepting the electronic noise that flutters deep in the background throughout the song, it’s as ordinarily constructed as a hook-heavy indie rock tune. Though it’s as effective and as charming as any other, crossing the pensive drive of New Order with the jagged bounce of the missed Life Without Buildings, it’s free of the cozy synth-generated colors that helped make the group stand out from their peers on 2001′s Scary World Theory. The rest of Faking the Books tends not to follow this mold. Electronic elements balance out the harsh guitars with regularity, resulting in a handful of full-blown zingers. These songs — “Call 1-800-FEAR,” “Micronomic,” “B-Movie” — bring the wallop, involving queasy synth bleats and blasting guitars in equal doses, along with melodies that are as sweet as ever. Several other tracks are either truer to the older material or slightly more experimental than what you’re used to hearing from them. “Geography-5″ is a skeletal lullaby with spare percussion and purring synths; “Alienation” and “Crawling by Numbers” fit in strings while also acting as safe havens for listeners who have been antagonized by too much lazy glitch stuff. As stunted as Valerie Trebeljahr’s politically minded lyrics might be from time to time, her voice remains a comforting thing to hear. All of these highlights add up to the best Teen Beat record not released by Teen Beat. ~ Andy Kellman, Rovi Performers: Sebastian Hess – Cello; Max Punktezahl – Guitar |

Bad Books $10.38 Manchester Orchestra’s Andy Hull and solo artist Kevin Devine first crossed paths in 2007, when both were tapped as openers for Brand New’s spring tour. Although they released a split EP several years later, this self-titled album is the duo’s first collaborative project, with both musicians sharing lead vocals and songwriting duties. The track list is split in half: Devine contributes five new tunes, most of them acoustic, introspective, indie folk ballads in the vein of Elliott Smith; and Hull offers an equal amount of noisy, messy pop/rock in return. Although they play on each other’s material, the two don’t carve out a unique sound as much as adapt to each other’s style, and this disc often sounds like another split EP as opposed to a conflation of talents. On album highlights like “Holding Down the Laughter,” though, Hull and Devine find a common groove, mixing cheesy ‘70s keyboards and lo-fi charm with earnest, summery pop hooks. ~ Andrew Leahey, Rovi Performers: Andy Hull – Vocals (Background), Bass, Guitar, Vocals, Keyboards; Ben Homola – Help, Drums, Percussion; Christopher Freeman – Vocals (Background), Percussion, Keyboards, Piano; Joe Cannetti – Bass; Jonathan Corley – Bass; Kevin Devine – Vocals (Background), Guitar, Vocals |

Reads the Books E.P. $7.98 Play the Reads the Books EP for your indie-ignorant friend and then mention that “hip-hop” is often a descriptor applied to the work of Prefuse 73 and they’ll wonder what the heck you’re talking about. The little sister of Surrounded by Silence, Reads the Books shares one track with the full-length, but little of its temperament or attitude. This is soft and personal Prefuse 73 manipulating source material provided by quirky darlings the Books. The sound is closer to the Books than Prefuse, but there’s that Prefuse whimsy and those cuts and stutters that make so much sense. The softness of it all makes this an easier sell for Books fans than Prefuse heads, but seeing the more personal side of the flashy producer flushes out his character nicely. Claudia Maria Deheza’s sweet vocals on “Pagina Ocho” are a tantalizing preview of the promised, Prefuse-helmed album from the singer and enough of a reason for longtime fans to check out this short, sweet, somewhat underwhelming diversion. ~ David Jeffries, Rovi Performers: Prefuse 73 – Sound Effects |

Agrippa’s 3 Books $13.57 It would be hard to improve on the description of Agrippa’s 3 Books found in the CD booklet: “This multi-movement piece delves into the expressive and rhythmic extremes of the four bass clarinets and is primarily inspired by occult philosophy and heavy metal music.” It’s also one of the few absolutely lucid statements found in the booklet, whose notes include extensive references not only to the Three Books of Occult Philosophy by Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa von Nettesheim (1531), but to Agrippa’s apocryphal Fourth Book, Foucault’s Pendulum by Umberto Eco, Roman Polanski’s film The Ninth Gate, and David Lynch’s Twin Peaks. Not that that’s a bad thing — the clever obfuscation in the notes adds to the fun of the CD, and how could music for bass clarinets merging occult philosophy and heavy metal not be fun? Despite the CD’s title, Agrippa’s 3 Books by Edmund Welles, the music is composed by bass clarinetist Cornelius Boots, and also includes Boots’ arrangements of tunes by Black Sabbath, Brazilian metal band Sepultura, and Spinal Tap. Each movement has three titles, one of which describes the musical content (“Hip-Hop Electronica Pop With Chorale,” “Odd-Meter Pop Meets Dirge With Chance Operation Melodies,” etc.) and also prepares the listener for what to expect. The music itself matches the titles well, consistently out of kilter, full of disarmingly quirky juxtapositions and rhythmic surprises. Boots has an inventively playful take on his material, and the unforeseen turns that the music makes are both highly sophisticated and highly entertaining, even more fun than the program notes lead us to expect. For fans of new music and/or heavy metal, Boots’ original voice is not to be missed. ~ Stephen Eddins, Rovi |

!Oye Esteban! [DVD] $17.99 !Oye Esteban! collects 18 music videos from the King of Manchester Mope, Morrissey. The former singing star of the Smiths is featured prominently in a majority of the videos. He visits the hometown of his idol, James Dean, for “Suedehead.” “November Spawned a Monster” sees him frolicking pensively in a desert, wearing a see-through shirt and an adhesive bandage over a nipple. His ode to the Kray brothers “The Last of the Famous International Playboys” finds the modern bard lip-syncing in an all-green room. He drives a convertible across California with his band in “My Love Life,” which features gorgeous black-and-white cinematography. “Sing Your Life” repositions Morrissey as a suave doo-wopper. He smirks passionately and stalks a steadicam-mounted camera as he promenades through an old city’s back alleys in “Tomorrow.” Videos that don’t feature Morrissey find an odd array of characters promoting animal rights, looking depressed, or performing any of a number of actions that our hero condones. The Warner Reprise DVD edition is fitted with pristine PCM sound, and all of the shine with vibrant, high-resolution color. A subtitle/lyrics mode makes for a quick-and-easy karaoke session. The camera obviously and absolutely loves Morrissey, and Moz fans will fall head over heals in love with this fine retrospective of videos. It’s a package that drips with a style and grace that would make Morrissey proud. ~ Tim DiGravina, Rovi |

!Viva! Los Straitjackets $17.98 The Shadows/Ventures of the ’90s arrive as a quarter in Mexican wrestling masks, burgundy turtlenecks, black jeans, black Converse and bedecked in silver sun pendants. Live los Straitjackets effect an inscrutable demeanor and rock from a stage uncluttered with monitors. Because they actually listen to each other, the drummer sits in their midst at the stage’s edge. The band is tight, fused and rocking. For me, there is no better guitar-based instrumental rock album of 1997. ~ Tom Schulte, Rovi |

Made in the UK: The Music of Attitude, 1977-1983 $18 “The mid-1970s was England’s darkest, dreariest hour. The UK was sliding deeper into unemployment, reeling from strike after strike, power cuts, the three-day work week, and IRA bombs. It was time for a new order and in London’s restless streets a handful of snotty young men, feisty females, and first generation Jamaican musicians created the UK’s punky revolution. They made it up as they went along and it touched every corner of the Disunited Kingdom. For a few glorious years the UK was the center of the cultural universe.” —Vivien Goldman When punk first rocked, the rough and rugged style on the streets was a world away from the super-slick music videos and corporate stylists that were to follow. And photographer Janette Beckman was on the front line of that hyper-energized time, capturing “the look” of the musicians and kids who were loudly defining an era. Collected for the first time in Made in the UK, Beckman’s powerful portraits celebrate the music and the attitude of Punk, Mod, Skinhead, 2 Tone, and Rockabilly culture in the UK. Made in the UK: The Music of Attitude, 1977–1983 documents a time when British music pushed every boundary. Beckman began her career working for Melody Maker, one of London’s premier weekly music papers. She soon had extraordinary access to the musicians topping the UK charts—icons of an era when music had an agenda—including The Clash, The Sex Pistols, The Jam, The Undertones, The Specials, The Beat, The Police, The Ramones, The Rockats, The Raincoats (Kurt Cobain’s inspiration), Billy Idol, and Echo and the Bunnymen. Among these groups, this generation still had the radical idea that each and every punk, skin, mod, rude boy, and ted was just as important as the bands. Janette Beckman’s gritty aesthetic placed her on good footing among the kids on the street—and the portraits she made prove |

Chapters: Office Space, Bandslam, Dazed and Confused, the Faculty, Slacker, D.o.a.. Excerpt: Bandslam Bandslam is a 2009 American romantic comedy film produced by Summit Entertainment and Walden Media . Written by Josh Cagan and Todd Graff , it stars Aly Michalka , Vanessa Hudgens , Gaelan Connell , Lisa Kudrow and Scott Porter . The film revolves around Will and Charlotte, who form an unlikely bond through their shared love of music. Assembling a like-minded crew of misfits, the friends form a rock group and perform in a battle of the bands competition called “Bandslam”. The film was shot in Austin, Texas , with additional scenes filmed in New York City. The film generated mostly positive reviews but it failed to chart in the top 10 when it was released on August 14, 2009 in the US, where it grossed only $ 2,250,000 in the weekend. Plot Will Burton (Gaelan Connell ) is a music enthusiast and a David Bowie fan. Throughout the movie, Will writes journal-like e-mails to Bowie seeking approval of his music, although Bowie never answers. When Will’s mother Karen (Lisa Kudrow ) finds a new job, he switches to a new school, which he is eager to do since he was bullied at his previous one. During lunch one day at his new school, he meets a girl whose name is written Sa5m, but pronounced Sam (Vanessa Hudgens ). She tells him about Bandslam, an annual music competition in which the winning band gets a recording contract. Will and Sa5m quickly become friends, but shortly after, he is sought after by another girl named Charlotte Barnes] (Alyson Michalka ). One afternoon, Charlotte asks Will to join her in an after-school day-care center. When she starts inviting him to hang out with her, the teenager is stunned as is his single mother Karen. Impressed by his eclectic knowledge of music, |

Good Invention Repaid With Interest $95 Bach was a prolific composer, often compelled by demands of the eighteenth century to produce a constant supply of new music. But a significant number of Bach’s works are borrowed or parodied versions of either his earlier compositions or the works of others. Throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, scholars sought to explain why a composer with so many original compositions would find it necessary to look for inspiration in his earlier works and in the works of other composers. Some scholars thought Bach borrowed for expediency. Often times, Bach was under extreme time constraints to compose new music. By using other compositions as models, Bach could generate large amounts of music within a short span of time. But there are many other Bach parody works revealing that Bach borrowed throughout his musical career. Bach’s contemporaries, including Handel, Vivaldi, and Telemann took a similar approach to composition. A survey of the parody practices of Bach and his contemporaries provides clues to eighteenth-century musical memory, which can be linked with an eighteenth-century view of music composition and performance practice. |
