Into the Music $6.77 Into the Music may not seem like a great Van Morrison record, one of his very best, upon first listen, especially if you’re trying to compare it to such masterpieces as Astral Weeks and Moondance, or even Tupelo Honey. Yet this is certainly one of his best records, one that is quietly winning and thoroughly ingratiating, sounding stronger, even irresistible, with each new spin. In a sense, this is the definitive post-classic-era Morrison, since it summarizes all of his attributes while showcasing each at a peak. Musically, this is a little harder and rootsier than its two predecessors, but only a little; this is still remarkably relaxed music, where the charm is in its ease of delivery and compositions. The difference, there’s more grit in the performances, more substance in the songs, letting Van the craftsman shine through along with his spirituality and grace. There may be no masterworks on the level of his early-’70s records, but these are deft, subtle songs that are full-bodied songs, unlike their counterparts on this album’s immediate predecessors or successors. There’s little question that this is not a knockout record, and some could even be excused if they find its charms elusive — but once you’ve entered Van’s sizable cult, few records sound as much like Morrison as this, a record that served as culmination of where he was coming from and served as blueprint for where he was going. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi Performers: Mark Isham – Piccolo, Piccolo Trumpet, Trumpet, Synthesizer; Robin Williamson – Penny Whistle, Whistle (Instrument); Katie Kisoon – Vocals (Background); Toni Marcus – Stroviola, Mandolin, Viola, Violin; Tony Marcus – Mandolin, Viola, Violin; David Hayes – Bass; Herbie Armstrong – Vocals (Background), Vocals, Guitar; Katie Kissoon – Vocals (Background), Vocals; |

Music $5.58 After years as one of the most prolific and successful songwriters in pop music, Carole King emerged in the ’70s with Tapestry, an album that catapulted her to the forefront of the singer/songwriter movement. While she had mined her back catalog for that album, she relied more heavily on songs written with new collaborator Toni Stern for Music. Coming out on the heels of the classic Tapestry, it’s hard not to feel like this album was a bit of a letdown. However, time has shown this album to be one of her finest. While these songs lyrically lack the simplistic beauty of Gerry Goffin-penned tunes, the melodies are very strong and Carole King adds some nice texture to her piano-based tunes with the tasteful percussion of Bobbye Hall. When King goes for grand statements, however, it doesn’t always work. Her call for peace and brotherhood works on songs like the opening track, “Brother, Brother,” but her voice is not strong enough and does not convey enough emotion to prevent uplifting tunes like “Carry Your Load” from sounding a bit hollow and preachy. But her songwriting is still in peak form, and there are many highlights including “It’s Gonna Take Some Time” (also made into a hit by the Carpenters) and “Song of Long Ago” (with backing vocals by James Taylor). ~ Vik Iyengar, Rovi Performers: Carole King – Celeste, Vocals (Background), Synthesizer, Guitar, Piano, Piano (Electric), Vocals; Ralph Schuckett – Celeste, Piano, Keyboards, Piano (Electric), Organ; Bobbye Hall – Bongos, Tambourine, Conga, Percussion; Ernie Watts – Woodwind, Wind; Oscar Brashear – Wind, Flugelhorn; Theresa Colderon – Conga; Abigale Haness – Vocals (Background), Vocals; Buddy Collette – Woodwind, Wind, |

Classic Old-Time Music $10.38 The songs featured on Smithsonian/Folkways’ Classic Old-Time Music were mostly recorded in the late ’50s and early ’60s (with a few scattered throughout the ’70s) and celebrate many of the performers who not only toured the festival circuits at that time, but many who sowed the seeds of the entire folk revival. Old-timey legends like Dock Boggs, Roscoe Holcomb, Doc Watson, Wade Ward, and a segment of the Carter Family all make prominent appearances, but the real uncut gems come from lesser-known folkies like the Iron Mountain String Band, J.E. Mainer’s Moutaineers, Sam & Kirk McGee, and Lee Sexton, whose version of “Pretty Polly” may be among the most spine-tingling on record. The later recordings by the New Lost City Ramblers, the Spare Change Boys, and a trio of college students performing “Ship in the Clouds” unfortunately feel a little too studied and reserved, and certainly not as natural as the performers who lived and breathed the music as a part of their daily lives, but their inclusion proves that the music is still alive today. Excellent liner notes are a hallmark of Smithsonian/Folkways recordings, and Classic Old-Time Music continues that tradition, providing a fascinating history behind each song and performer, ensuring hours of listening and re-listening pleasure. ~ Zac Johnson, Rovi Performers: Mike Seeger – Appalachian Dulcimer, Autoharp, Mandolin, Fiddle, Vocals; Al McCanless – Fiddle; Andy Cahan – Banjo; Caleb Finch – Fiddle; Clarence Ashley – Banjo, Vocals; Clark Kessinger – Fiddle; Cousin Emmy – Banjo, Vocals; David Johnson – Fiddle, Vocals; Dock Boggs – Banjo, Vocals; |
